Why Baby Swimming Lessons Matter — Water Safety from 3 Months

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for Australian children aged 1–3. Royal Life Saving Society Australia reports approximately 30 children under five drown each year — and hundreds more are hospitalised after near-drowning incidents.

The single most effective prevention is early, structured water safety education. Neptune's baby swimming lessons teach structured, progressive water safety and life-saving skills from the very first class — from holding the wall, to controlled water entry, to responding to cue words. These aren't add-ons to the curriculum. They are the curriculum.

And it's one of the most meaningful bonding experiences you can share with your child. You're in the water together, singing songs, playing games, and building a lifetime of water confidence — side by side.

Baby & Toddler Swimming Programs — Coral, Kelp & Starfish

Neptune's baby program has three progressive levels. Each builds on the last as your child grows in confidence, strength, and water ability. A parent or caregiver is in the water for all levels.

🪸 Coral — 3 to 12 Months

Your baby's first swimming experience. Coral is all about comfort, trust, and building the blocks of water safety. Parents and babies discover the water together — singing, playing, kicking, and learning the cue words that will keep your child safer for life.

What your baby learns in Coral:

  • Safe water entry — assisted entry with parent
  • Cue word introduction — child's name + READY, GO before every submersion
  • Kicking — seated kick on the step; kicking on a stationary mat
  • Motorboat glides — parent-guided movement through the water
  • Paddling after toys — building arm movement and water engagement
  • Jumping Monkeys grip exercise — baby holds parent's thumbs, gently lifted in and out of water to build grip strength
  • Holding and climbing the wall — an essential life-saving skill from the first weeks
  • Cue word practice on the wall
  • Underwater introduction — Ring a Rosie-style submersion for babies showing breath control
  • Pancake rolls — front-to-back rolling in water, introducing directional awareness
  • Back float — parent-supported back float with gentle swaying (Otter Song)
  • Kicking on back under tunnel
  • Underwater glide to wall — the foundation of all future swimming

Songs: If You're Happy and You Know It · It's Raining It's Pouring · Wheels on the Bus · Motorboat · Ring a Rosey · Row Row Row Your Boat · Otter Song · Teddy Bears.

After 8–12 consistent lessons in Coral, most babies have developed early breath control, a positive association with water, and the instinctive reach for the wall.

🌿 Kelp — 12 to 24 Months

Confidence and growing independence. In Kelp, your toddler begins transitioning toward working more with the instructor. They can move independently and are ready for more purposeful skill-building — kicking, gliding, and beginning to interact directly with the instructor.

What your toddler learns in Kelp:

  • Safety slide entry — sliding into water from the edge, building safe and controlled entry habits
  • Cue word reinforcement — standing/sitting on step with cue word practice
  • Sink rings — retrieving objects from below the surface, building underwater confidence
  • Kicking with a kickboard — first independent kickboard use, building leg power
  • Paddling after balls — on a platform for depth adjustment
  • Streamline jumps to parents — jumping from the edge, with gradual encouragement toward jumping to instructor
  • Underwater glide to wall and climb up — practised every single lesson
  • Teddy Bears / Crocodiles straight to wall — back-to-wall glide with cue words
  • 3 in the Bed — rotational rolling in water front and back
  • Star float — independent front float with arms and legs extended
  • Back kicking — kicking on back with parent support
  • Monkeys on wall → underwater pass to instructor — the key transition: child passes from parent to instructor for the first time
  • Mat run — balance, coordination, and confidence on a floating mat

Songs: If You're Happy and You Know It · It's Raining It's Pouring · Dingle Dangle Scarecrow · 3 in the Bed · Twinkle Twinkle · Teddy Bears.

The "underwater pass to instructor" is one of the most important milestones in the programme — it builds the trust foundation for independent lessons in Starfish and beyond.

⭐ Starfish — 24 to 36 Months

Growing independence and structured skill-building. Starfish children develop real swimming ability. They follow structured directions and begin the foundations of the full Pre-School Swimming program.

What your child learns in Starfish:

  • Independent safe entry — entering without parent assistance, using cue words
  • Bubbles — blowing bubbles under water, building breath control
  • Push and glide with boards — independent propulsion from the wall
  • Kicking with kickboard — stronger, more independent kicking technique
  • Streamline / jump to parents and instructor
  • Paddle to wall + underwater glide + reach and hold — every lesson
  • Climb up independently
  • Starfish float sequence — front float → roll to back → count to 10 → roll forward → swim to wall. The signature survival skill.
  • Kicking on back with kickboard — independent back kicking
  • Sink rings — deeper, more confident underwater retrieval

After Starfish, children transition into Neptune's full Learn to Swim program.

How to Prepare Your Baby for Their First Swimming Lesson

A few small habits at home make the first few lessons much smoother.

At bath time

  • Pour water over their head. A gentle cup pour during every bath gets your baby used to water on their face. This is the single most useful thing you can do before lessons start.
  • Make it fun with songs. Singing during bath time builds the same associations Neptune teachers use in class — "If You're Happy and You Know It" and "It's Raining It's Pouring" are used from lesson one.
  • Play and splash. The more positive experiences your baby has with water before class, the more quickly they'll relax in the pool.

Before your first lesson

  • Feed your baby 45–90 minutes before class — not right before. A slightly empty stomach is more comfortable in the water and reduces the chance of vomiting during submersions.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early so your baby adjusts to the environment — the echo, warm air, and chlorine smell — before they're in the water.
  • Wear your swimwear under your clothes to make the changeover faster and less stressful.
  • Bring a dummy or favourite comfort toy for after the lesson to ease the transition out of the pool.

Managing nerves — yours and your baby's

Babies are extremely sensitive to their parent's emotional state. If you're anxious in the water, your baby will feel it. Neptune instructors work with parents as much as babies — especially in the first few lessons. It's normal for babies to cry initially; this almost always resolves within 3–4 lessons as the routine becomes familiar. If you have your own water anxiety, let your instructor know.

What to Expect — Baby Swimming Milestones by Age

Every baby develops at their own pace. Here's what Neptune instructors typically see at each stage:

3–6 months (Early Coral)

  • Begins to relax body posture in the water after 3–4 lessons
  • Responds to water temperature and sensory stimulation with increased alertness
  • Starts to recognise the cue word sequence — body stiffens slightly in anticipation before "GO"
  • Begins instinctive kicking movements in water
  • Can be introduced to brief, supported back floats

6–12 months (Later Coral)

  • Deliberate kicking with visible leg engagement
  • Consistent breath-holding response to READY, GO cue
  • Reaches for the wall when guided toward it
  • Can complete a short underwater glide (0.5–1 metre) with parent guidance
  • Shows excitement on arrival at the pool — water association is positive

12–18 months (Early Kelp)

  • Safety slide entry with growing confidence
  • Kicks independently on a kickboard for short distances
  • Will jump from the pool edge to parent
  • Holds the wall briefly without parent support
  • Tolerates brief separation from parent

18–24 months (Later Kelp)

  • Completes underwater pass to instructor — a significant independence milestone
  • Glides to the wall and grabs it without assistance
  • Attempts star float on front
  • Back kicking with parent support, some children independently
  • Begins following two-step instructor directions

24–36 months (Starfish)

  • Enters water independently using safe entry technique
  • Completes the Starfish float sequence: front float → roll to back → count to 10 → roll forward → swim to wall
  • Kicks on back with kickboard independently
  • Retrieves sink rings confidently from below the surface
  • Follows instructor directions without parent in water
  • Ready for transition into independent Pre-School Swimming classes

Frequently Asked Questions — Baby Swimming Lessons

What age can babies start swimming lessons?

From 3 months in our Coral program. The earlier they start, the more natural water feels — and the more ingrained those life-saving reflexes become. Before 3 months, neck muscles aren't yet strong enough for the positions used in class.

Do I have to get in the water with my baby?

Yes — for Coral and Kelp classes, a parent or caregiver joins the water. It's a core part of the program. Your baby builds confidence through you, and most parents tell us it's their favourite part of the week. As children progress through Starfish and into Pre-School Swimming, they transition to independent lessons with the instructor.

What are the different baby swimming levels?

Our baby and toddler programs are Coral (3–12 months), Kelp (12–24 months), and Starfish (24–36 months). Use our class selector or call (02) 8014 7785 if you're not sure where to start.

What are cue words and why do you use them?

Before any submersion or water entry, parents say their child's name followed by "READY, GO." Repeated consistently from the very first lesson, this cue teaches babies to anticipate water on their face and hold their breath — a critical reflex for water safety. It also gives your child control and confidence, rather than being surprised by the water.

How much do baby swimming lessons cost?

$25 per lesson (30 minutes), billed monthly. Your first lesson is a free trial — no commitment required.

How warm is the pool?

32°C year-round. No cold mornings, no weather cancellations. Ideal for babies and toddlers — warm enough for comfort without overstimulating.

Do I need to bring a swim nappy?

Yes — swim nappies are mandatory for any child not yet toilet trained. We recommend a disposable swim nappy inside a neoprene reusable swim nappy for extra protection. Available at most chemists, Target, and baby stores.

How do I prepare my baby for their first swimming lesson?

Pour a little water over their head at bath time. Make bath time fun with songs. Feed them 45–90 minutes before class (not right before). Arrive 10 minutes early so they can adjust to the pool environment. Let your instructor know if you or your baby have any anxiety — it's very common.

Where are the lessons held?

At our Eastern Creek Quarter location — 181 Rooty Hill Rd South, Eastern Creek NSW 2766. Heated indoor pool, free on-site parking, easy access from Blacktown, Rooty Hill, Mount Druitt, Schofields, and surrounding areas. Baby lessons are also available at our Box Hill location.

Can grandparents or carers bring a baby instead of parents?

Yes — any caregiver comfortable in the water can bring a baby or toddler to class. The in-water adult plays an active role each lesson, so they should be confident in the water. Just let us know in advance.

How long before my baby shows water confidence?

Most babies show clear water confidence — relaxed posture, consistent cue word response, positive reaction to entry — within 8–10 lessons. Consistency is key. Weekly attendance builds reflexes faster than irregular lessons.

Is there a minimum age?

The minimum starting age at Neptune is 3 months. Before 3 months, babies' immune systems are still developing and neck muscles aren't yet strong enough for the positions used in class.

What if my baby cries during lessons?

Completely normal — especially in the first 2–4 lessons. Babies are in an unfamiliar environment. Most crying resolves quickly as the routine becomes familiar. Neptune instructors are experienced with unsettled babies and will work with you on the best approach.
